Pickles' Phenomenal Phantasmagoria

Pickles' Phenomenal Phantasmagoria

Original artwork signed by the artist - Oil on wrapped canvas - 36" x 36"

Many of you know I'm a hick from the sticks, and recognize it's hard to take that out of a man. When I was young, I caught a greased pig at the county fair. My mom was instantly horrified not knowing how to care for a pig. She was still in the grand stands of the arena when my fourth grade teacher promised to help us out. Their family had a small barn where they regularly raised pigs. My new little oinker found a home in one of their stalls beside other enormous, crabby, and intolerant hogs.

For the next year, I would ride my bike every day to the outskirts of town to feed and care for her. From this and other experiences in my small town, I learned the value of work.

At that time, I had a crush on a girl a year ahead of me in school. I thought it would be funny to honor her name by naming my new pig "Jenny" after her. Trust me, it wasn't meant to be offensive, in fact the opposite was true. Somehow in my naive boyish mind, naming my pig after a crush was meant to be a compliment. Because my sister spilled the beans and told her years later, I have since had to apologize for the whole blunder.

Done in an open impressionist or pointillist style, this exotic animal was painted in bold, split-compliment color schemes and high contrasting value scales. The "shattering" effect as I often refer to it, adds energy to the spaces and helps transition shapes perceived lines.
